Life is one big learning opportunity tailored for us through every experience we have. One of the most amazing learning experiences for me was when a friend helped me after a very difficult time. She asked if I would do things the same way in hindsight as I did then. NO WAY! I would never do that again. She said great but why are you beating yourself up and feeling guilt about something you did the best you could at the time? She said the famous quote from Maya Angelou
“I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better.”
The same holds true for living with dementia after a parent or loved one has passed away. We are still managing and dealing with the issues and guilt even though they are no longer here. We need to realize that we did the best we could. If we were to do it again or talk to someone that is going through what we did – we would do differently and share our lessons.
